A gift card is a completely legitimate gift — there's nothing less
honorable about it than something wrapped in a box. No shame in it
at all, seriously.
Amount: anywhere between $5 and $2,000. One card
is plenty — no need to send more than one.
Timing: by default the card sends immediately,
but Amazon lets you schedule it for a future date at checkout if
you'd rather it land on the actual day.
